Getting ready for school to start is among us. The next two weeks at my house will consist of getting my kids and myself ready for a new year of school, germs, and all the other fun things that come with a new school year. There are so many things I do to try and get my kids here are the  top 10 healthy things you can do (I do) to get my kids ready for back-to-school.

1) Make sure kids are going to bed at a reasonable time each night. This helps their bodies rest and helps fight off any sickness they may be fighting.

2) Practice good hand cleaning. Give kids hand sanitizer and practice using it with them before each meal. This gets them ready and used tothe routine of clean hands before touching food or their mouth.

3) Practice eating good. Try new foods and healthier snack choices. This helps kids get use to new foods that are good for them and convenient for mom when packing lunches. My daughter’s schools ask that snacks and lunches brought from home be healthy food choices.

4) Take vitamins. This helps keep your kids healthy and helps prevent illnesses when getting the proper amount of daily vitamins.

5)Exercise. Make sure kids are outdoors having fun and active. This is not only fun for them, but good for their bodies as well.

6) Get yearly physicals. I just took my two girls today to have their shots and physicals. I want to start off the year making sure my kids are healthy and that I have taken all the preventative  measures I can.

7) Talk to kids about good food and harmful products (food or drugs) they put in their bodies. This will help ensure they try to make better/right choice when it comes to food and junk food (and saying no to drugs).

8) Visit the dentist. Ensure your children have proper dental health. This helps with unnecessary pain and possible cavities.

9) Have your child’s eyes checked. This was a big issue for my oldest daughter. Not having her checked out before she started school made it hard for her the first few months. Unnecessary headaches and frustration due to inability to see clearly.

10) Medications. Make sure if you child takes medication that you remind them how important it is to take them each day. If they have a medication they take each day, make sure your child knows what time it needs to be taken and where to go to the nurses office to take it while at school.

Starting school can be stressful for parents and children. I know a big worry for me is “Oh no. Here we go starting a new year. That means we are starting cold season”. It seems like when school is in session, I always have a child sick. This year I am going to be prepared and take all the necessary steps I can to start the year healthy and stay that way.
