Children’s book with versions available for iPhone, iPad, and paperback.
The storybook version has been chosen as a Top 10 Must-Have eBook by lilsugar of Popsugar.com and a Top 10 Educational iPad app by Digital Storytime.
Penelope the Purple Pirate” is based on the author, Melissa Norway’s little tomboy who enjoys adventures with her friends.
About the author in her words:
“As a former teacher, I felt it important to include fun facts about the sea creatures in the story, activities for the classroom or home, and discussion questions.  Some of these questions talk about how we should treat others as each of Penelope’s friends have some type of disability”.
My experience:
When I first received the opportunity to explore this adorable children’s book for my iPhone, I was so excited. My kids enjoy stories and having the opportunity to view it on my phone was a plus. While I am out running errands, driving my carpools for school & sports, shopping at the grocery store, going on a long drive to visit my parents, busy with my daily routine and more, it is so helpful to have a great lovable children’s story to entertain my kids.
Penelope the Purple Pirate is such an adorable story.
Features I enjoyed:
Illustrations: The illustrations are beautiful and bring you into the story. The colors, details, and added sparkles put a smile on my face and my kids. We couldn’t help but be engaged with what was going on in each picture.
Storyline: What a special story that inspires kids to use their imagination and explore far off journeys. Kids learn about friendships, sharing, travel, sea animals, they can do and go anywhere in their imaginations, and that everyone is unique with their own special way of helping create a special adventure.
Story Narration: My 5 (almost 6) year old was able to follow along in the story as it was narrated to her in a child’s voice. As a girl (great voice and speech) narrates the story, each word that is being read highlights in red. This was great for my daughter who is learning to read and track words. She was able to enjoy the story being read to her and try to follow (track and try to read) the words herself as it is being read to her.
Overall:
What a wonderful experience and book that I recommend to others. Both my two youngest kids enjoy reading and listening to Penelope the Purple Pirate.  I really liked having the iPhone app option. This is easier for me to take while on the go. Both my kids really like the story and I can’t blame them, it is totally cute and I like watching/listening to it with them.
This is a great story for the classroom or home. At the end of the story parents/teachers can enjoy sharing with kids sea animal facts and fun questions to help kids think about what happened in the story.
