For those of you who missed my first Tutu Tutorial.
Homemade Tutu Tutorial
I thought it would be soo much fun to figure out how to make a tutu for my lil’ princess. She is in ballet and loves tutu’s. This is such a great idea to make with your lil’ girl, party favors, gift idea, and a great craft for a party.
Materials:
*Tulle – I used about 3 yards of tulle for each color on this tutu (good to use 5 yards of each color), this is sold by the yard. You could get rolls tulle. I let my princess pick her colors for all her tutu’s.
*Spools of matching ribbon (If you choose to have ribbon. You don’t need)
Measure Your Child
Waist – If you’re going to use elastic, cut a length of 1/2″ elastic that is 2 inches shorter than your child’s waist. If you’re using ribbon, you will need to cut her waist measurement plus 2 feet or so, enough to tie the tutu around her body.
Waist to knee – How long do you want the skirt to be? What I do is guess about what length I like and then you can trim and make it shorter if you want when you are done.Instructions
1st: Take the tulle and roll it up like I did in the picture.
THEN cut off the end on the right and cut off end on the left. This will get rid of the folds and the excess on the sides.
Then you will measure how wide you want your strips and cut. I did 3 inches as you can see in the pictures.

Once you are done cutting your strips. They should look like this.
Then you want to cut the strips to the length you are going to want the skirt to be. I do this by folding a piece over and seeing about how long I might want the tutu to be.

If you’re using elastic, overlap the ends and sew. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can stitch the ends together by hand. I usually do elastic, but love the way the ribbon looks when it ties in the back, so I made this one with ribbon.
Grab 6 (or however many you want, I used 6 on this one) pieces of tulle and stack it nicely.? (Mine are not neat. HA)
Fold it in half. Loop the center point under your waist and?? then pull the ends down over the waistband and tuck them into the loop. Pull the ends so that the top makes a loose knot.?
If you pull the knot too tight, it will curl and stretch the elastic, and difficult to work with. You don’t want to have to loosen later (I did on my first one). Make it not too tight and not too loose.???

Repeat that process. I usually try to do a pattern. On this one I did (hard to tell) but it was light pink 3 then dark pink 3. I then reversed the order. After two knots, I added a shinny ribbon in the tulle I was tying and repeated that pattern.
The fluffier you want it the more tulle you will use in your rows (meaning in this one I used 6 on the ones I made in the top pictures I used 10-12 strips to tie the knot).
Your tutu is finished.
You can add satin ribbon, weaving it around the elastic/ribbon to give it a more finished look, add flowers, bows, or whatever creative thing you can think of.
Once you are finished you can get a feel for it and you will find that you get better each one you do and you get more ideas.
